UPS Systems Frequently Asked Questions

What is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply)?

A UPS is a device that keeps your equipment running when mains power fails, dips or surges by instantly switching to battery power. It protects against blackouts, brownouts, surges and unstable mains — giving you time to keep operating or shut down safely without data loss or downtime. UPS systems range from small desktop units through to multi-megawatt data-centre installations.

What are the different types of UPS?

There are three main types — standby (offline), line-interactive and online double-conversion — plus modular and three-phase platforms for larger sites. Standby suits home and small-office equipment; line-interactive adds automatic voltage regulation for servers and network racks; online double-conversion fully isolates your load for mission-critical IT; and modular and three-phase systems scale into data centres and industrial sites. (Use the "Which type of UPS do I need?" guide above to match your environment.)

What size UPS do I need?

Size a UPS to your load (in watts or VA), the runtime you need on battery, and any future growth. As a rule of thumb, total the power draw of everything you're protecting, allow around 20–25% headroom, then choose a UPS that comfortably exceeds that at the runtime you require. Sizing also depends on power factor and whether you need redundancy — if you're unsure, call us on 1300 555 992 and we'll size it for you.

What's the difference between line-interactive and online (double-conversion) UPS?

A line-interactive UPS corrects minor voltage sags and surges and switches to battery within a few milliseconds during an outage. An online double-conversion UPS continuously rebuilds a clean sine wave with zero transfer time, completely isolating your equipment from all mains problems. Line-interactive is ideal for servers and most business IT; online is the choice for mission-critical loads, sensitive equipment and extended runtime.

How long do UPS batteries last?

Most UPS batteries (sealed lead-acid / VRLA) have a 3–5 year design life and are typically replaced around every 4–5 years, depending on temperature, cycling and load. Lithium-ion batteries last considerably longer. Our own UPS Solutions XRT6 range is the only UPS in Australia with 10-year design-life batteries. We replace batteries for all major brands on-site.

Do you install and service UPS systems, or just sell them?

Both. We supply, install, commission, maintain, repair and provide 24/7 emergency support for UPS systems — for every major brand and our own XRT range — with local teams across Australia. We also handle battery replacement, trade-ins and end-of-life upgrades, so we can support your system across its entire lifecycle.
