What Environmental Monitoring and Security Do

Eyes and Ears in the Room, Around the Clock

Most damage in a server room or data centre starts small: a slow rise in temperature, a leak under the floor, a hot spot in a switchboard, a door left open. None of it shows up on the IT systems until equipment is already at risk.

UPS Solutions supplies, installs and supports environmental monitoring and physical security for data centres, server rooms, comms rooms and critical environments across Australia. Sensors for temperature, humidity, water, smoke, heat and battery health sit alongside cameras and access control, all reporting to one platform with alerts the moment a limit is crossed.

It is the hardware layer behind our DCIM & CREMS solutions, and it works alongside our UPS Remote Monitoring Service, using APC NetBotz, Vertiv and ServersCheck equipment.

Where Every Sensor Goes

Each risk in a server room needs its own sensor, in its own place. Tap a number to see what it watches and why it matters.

Temperature & humidity

Sensors on the rack fronts and backs track inlet temperature and humidity, the two conditions that most often shorten equipment and battery life.

Physical Security for Critical Rooms

Who Was in the Room, and What They Did

APC NetBotz appliance, cameras and sensors with the monitoring console

Environmental sensors tell you what is happening to the equipment. Security tells you who was there. Together they give a complete record of the room, so a door left open or an unexpected visit is seen alongside the temperature rise that followed it.

  • IP cameras and videoSee the room as well as the readings, with video tied to every alert.
  • Motion detectionKnow when someone is in the room, including outside business hours.
  • Door and access sensingDoor contacts and access control record who entered, and when.
  • Two-way audioSpeak to someone on site through supported NetBotz appliances.

Why Choose UPS Solutions for Monitoring and Security

Australian owned critical infrastructure specialists since 2002. We monitor the room and service the power and cooling in it, so an alert leads straight to a team that can act on it.

Problems found early

Heat, water, smoke and battery faults are flagged while they are still small, before they reach the equipment.

Alerts that reach someone

Thresholds and alerts are set for your site, so the right person is told the moment a limit is crossed.

Works with what you have

Sensors and appliances are added to your existing racks, rooms and UPS, without replacing infrastructure.

A record of the room

Continuous logs of conditions and access support audits, insurance claims and maintenance planning.

One platform, every sensor

Environmental readings, video and access events in one place, rather than a handful of separate devices.

Supported across Australia

Installed, configured and supported by our own team, alongside the power and cooling they protect.

Vendor agnostic by design.

Environmental Monitoring and Security FAQs

The questions we are asked most when scoping sensors and security for a room.

What is environmental monitoring for a server room?

Environmental monitoring uses sensors to watch the conditions around critical equipment: temperature, humidity, water leaks, smoke, heat and battery health. Readings report to one platform, and alerts go out the moment a threshold you set is crossed, so problems are dealt with before they damage equipment or cause downtime.

Which sensors does a server room need?

Most rooms start with temperature and humidity sensors at the racks and leak detection under the floor and around cooling units. Smoke detection, thermal and infrared monitoring, UPS battery monitoring, door sensing and cameras are added depending on the room, the equipment and the risks. We recommend the right mix after looking at the site.

Where should temperature and humidity sensors go?

At rack level rather than on a wall, because inlet temperature at the equipment is what matters. Sensors are typically placed at the front and back of racks, and across hot and cold aisles in larger rooms, so you can see how cooling is actually reaching the equipment.

How does leak detection work?

A leak sensing rope or spot sensor is laid under the floor, around cooling units and along pipes. When water touches it, an alert is raised straight away, giving time to act before water reaches power or IT equipment. Rope runs can be extended as the room grows.

What does UPS battery monitoring measure?

Battery monitoring tracks each cell's temperature, voltage and resistance, the string's charge and discharge current, and optionally gas emissions from lead acid and lithium-ion batteries. It shows weakening cells long before a battery fails during an outage.

Can environmental monitoring be added to an existing room?

Yes. Sensors, monitoring appliances and cameras are added to the racks, UPS and cooling you already have, without replacing your infrastructure. We start by understanding the room and what you need to see.

Which brands do you supply?

We supply and support APC NetBotz, Vertiv environmental monitoring including Liebert RDU-A G2 and Geist, Vertiv SmartCabinet, ServersCheck, Enlogic sensors and our own UPS Solutions sensors, along with PowerShield battery monitoring. We are vendor agnostic, so the recommendation follows your site.

How does this relate to DCIM, CREMS and UPS remote monitoring?

Environmental monitoring and security are the sensors and devices in the room. CREMS brings them together on one platform, DCIM adds the wider view of power, cooling and capacity, and our UPS Remote Monitoring Service watches your UPS fleet 24/7. Many sites use all of them together.
