Harbourside East & West - Port Moresby, PNG Case Study
Harbourside East + West UPS Project Case Study
Project Overview:
Stabilising Power for Two of PNG’s Most Iconic Commercial Properties
In 2025, UPS Solutions successfully designed, supplied, and commissioned Papua New Guinea’s largest non-rotary Modular UPS systems for the landmark Harbourside East & West commercial developments in Port Moresby. The deployment included high-performance 3-phase Modular AC UPS systems built to deliver consistent power stability in a region challenged by poor grid quality and frequent power fluctuations.
The Challenge:
Prior to this upgrade, the buildings faced significant infrastructure issues due to unreliable power:
-
Severe Power Instability: Fluctuations in the local grid led to frequent electrical faults and equipment damage.
-
High Maintenance Costs: Repeated equipment failures resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual repairs and replacements.
-
Lack of Existing Stabilisation Infrastructure: The sites had no voltage stabilisers in place, leaving all systems vulnerable to energy surges.
The Solution:
UPS Solutions’ technical design team partnered with Vertiv to deliver a resilient, modular solution using the Vertiv EXL S1 UPS platform with lithium-ion battery technology. The systems were tailored for high-density performance, deploying 1MW and 800kVA units across the two properties.
The solution included:
-
Power Stabilisation & Correction: Enhanced power factor and energy control, reducing grid dependency.
-
Autonomous Generator Management: Fewer generator start/stop cycles due to extended battery runtime.
-
Integrated Architecture: No need for standalone voltage stabilisers—the UPS system handles all fluctuations internally.
-
Cost & Space Efficiency: Delivered advanced power infrastructure while reducing equipment needs and physical footprint.
The Outcome:
-
Clean, Reliable Power: Both sites now receive stable, uninterrupted power—dramatically reducing downtime and faults.
-
Over $600,000 in Cost Savings: Achieved through the elimination of external stabilisers and reduced maintenance demands.
-
Improved Sustainability: Lithium battery banks have decreased generator reliance, fuel consumption, and emissions.
-
Proven Scalability: An additional 900kVA of UPS capacity has already been approved and is in progress—ensuring future growth support.
By delivering a robust, future-ready power solution, UPS Solutions helped secure operational continuity and long-term cost efficiency for two of PNG’s most iconic properties—reinforcing our expertise in stabilising mission-critical infrastructure across the Pacific region.
