Some manufacturers like APC and the re-badged HP and Dell UPS systems in the market have plastic or metal cartridges housing numerous raw lead acid batteries.
You can either replace the entire cartridge which is usually more costly or replace the raw batteries inside of the cartridges which is usually more cost effective. There is however a few cartridges which have embedded software and require a full cartridge replacement.

When talking about UPS lead acid batteries, there are two common battery design life periods you will see on your battery datasheet, (5) & (10) year.
Best practice would be to replace your (5) year batteries after (3) years and your (10) year batteries after (6) years.
There are many other factors and it's best to perform regular testing, however this rule of thumb is the most closely aligned to what we are seeing in the market. Hotswappable batteries can be replaced whilst the UPS is running. No downtime is required, however if there is an outage whilst battery work is being performed there will be outage vulnerabilities.
This all depends on whether the UPS has hotswappable features and whether we can isolate the battery bank.
