WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REPLACEMENT BATTERY CARTRIDGE, SUCH AS AN APC RBC & RAW VRLA SLA AGM BATTERIES?

Some manufacturers like APC and the re-badged HP and Dell UPS systems in the market have plastic or metal cartridges housing numerous raw lead acid batteries.

You can either replace the entire cartridge which is usually more costly or replace the raw batteries inside of the cartridges which is usually more cost effective. There is however a few cartridges which have embedded software and require a full cartridge replacement.

Our representatives will be able to provide the best options as well as the install cost. Bear in mind it is always best to use one of our experts to replace your battery as they are trained in battery safety and there is risk of electrocution if the right safety procedures are not followed.

WHEN AND WHY SHOULD I REPLACE MY UPS BATTERIES?

When talking about UPS lead acid batteries, there are two common battery design life periods you will see on your battery datasheet, (5) & (10) year.

Best practice would be to replace your (5) year batteries after (3) years and your (10) year batteries after (6) years.

There are many other factors and it's best to perform regular testing, however this rule of thumb is the most closely aligned to what we are seeing in the market.

Changing batteries before the end of their design life prevents reduced runtime, acid leakage, damage to it's surrounds and possible fire hazards.

WHAT TYPE OF UPS BATTERIES DO I NEED?

The most common battery for UPS systems in Australia is the Valve Regulated Lead Acid Battery with absorbent glass mat or AGM for short. There are now UPS systems on the market with Li-Ion batteries most of which released in 2018 and we shouldn't be seeing a need to replace them until at least 2025.

UPS Solutions scopes the correct battery based on the model, s/n, physical & technical requirements of your UPS. It is always best to contact our team on 1300 555 992 or sales@upss.com.au for a free quote and to ensure the correct UPS battery is chosen.

ARE MY BATTERIES HOT SWAPPABLE?

This all depends on whether the UPS has hotswappable features and whether we can isolate the battery bank.

Please provide your UPS model or battery configuration and we can help.

For larger battery projects we can perform a complimentary site inspection.

SHOULD I REPLACE MY UPS BATTERIES OR MY WHOLE UPS?

We would usually confirm this based on a few considerations: UPS model and service life, battery cost, new UPS cost, ongoing service costs, the business power requirements and future business goals and plans.

After careful consideration we will suggest the best outcome so you reduce your operating costs and have a reliable future proofed UPS power backup solution.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO REPLACE?

This question is relative to the size, type and quantity of UPS batteries being replaced.

The way we like to plan our battery replacements with our customers is to avoid impact to the business operations, at times this can mean after hours and weekend works which we are more than happy to accommodate.

HOW DO I DISPOSE OF MY OLD UPS BATTERIES?

Unfortunately batteries are corrosive and you cannot throw them in a standard bin. You will need to turnover the batteries to certified battery disposal companies to comply with Australian regulations.

We can help you choose a recycling provider, but usually if we are performing the install we can take the old batteries offsite or co-ordinate for a courier to pick up the batteries and take them to our recycling partners.

HOW SHOULD I PLAN MY BATTERY MAINTENANCE PROGRAM?

The key factor to achieving optimum performance and long battery life is to follow a regular care and maintenance program.

Regular testing and inspection will help to maximise battery life. A routine inspection at least once a month is recommended to maintain optimum performance.

Speak to one of our staff members who will work with you to put together a battery maintenance schedule.

We will then add this program into our systems and stay in touch to make sure your program is on schedule so you can rest assured you do not experience any downtime due to battery health.

WHY CHOOSE UPS SOLUTIONS?

Overlooking any of the considerations above can turn your critical backup into the source of your business downtime. We take the time to understand your business, factor in the considerations above and provide a comprehensive solution suitable to your requirements.

Being a local privately owned Australian business we can provide that personal touch and care we find our competitors are lacking.

Please let us know how we can help with your battery maintenance plan today.
