Replace individual batteries or entire cartridges?

If you have an uninterruptible power supply that uses a battery cartridge, it may be possible to replace the raw batteries instead of the whole cartridge. This can be a more cost-effective option when only one or two of the batteries in the cartridge have started to fail. However, some UPS models use battery cartridges with embedded software that must be replaced as a single unit.

When should UPS batteries be replaced?

If your UPS system raises the alarm to let you know that your batteries are failing, you should replace them immediately. But we recommend replacing batteries before they fail to ensure that your UPS power supply can always provide backup power when it is needed. As a guideline, batteries designed to last for five years should be replaced after three years and batteries designed to last for ten years should be replaced after six years. You can ensure that your batteries are unlikely to fail when they are most needed.
